CI/CD Pipeline Architecture: Zero-Downtime Deployments with Docker & AWS
Blue-green deployments, rolling updates, immutable container images, GitHub Actions, and automated smoke testing.
Modern engineering teams deploy multiple times per day. Forcing scheduled maintenance windows or dropping active user WebSocket connections during a rollout is unacceptable for mission-critical software products. Achieving true zero-downtime releases requires orchestrating immutable Docker containers, health check targets, and backwards-compatible database migrations.
1. Blue-Green vs. Rolling Deployments
In a Blue-Green deployment model, new software versions are deployed to an identical staging environment (Green). Traffic is routed to Green only after comprehensive automated health checks pass, allowing instant 1-second rollbacks if errors occur.
2. Database Migrations Without Table Locks
Zero-downtime deployments require backwards-compatible database migrations. Altering columns directly during a live release locks tables. Follow the Expand/Contract pattern: add new nullable columns first, deploy code that writes to both, backfill legacy rows, and remove old columns later.
"A deployment pipeline should be boring and predictable. If releasing code requires late-night anxiety, your deployment architecture is broken."
3. Automated Smoke Tests in CI/CD
Before switching live DNS or load balancer targets, GitHub Actions must run automated synthetic transactions against staging containers to verify authentication, database writes, and external third-party webhook integrations.
- Immutable container tagging: Every release tagged with Git SHA, never 'latest'.
- Automated health checks: ALB checks /api/healthz for 3 consecutive 200 OKs before traffic drain.
- Expand/Contract schema migrations: Zero exclusive locks on production tables.
- Automated canary traffic shaping: Route 5% of users to new release before 100% rollout.
Never let database schema migrations and application code deployments be tightly coupled in the same step. Always expand schemas first, deploy new code, and contract legacy schema afterwards.
