Web Vitals Optimization: INP, LCP, and TTFB Deep Dive for Engineering Teams

Google's Core Web Vitals metric set is the search engine's definitive benchmark for real-world user experience. With Interaction to Next Paint (INP) officially replacing First Input Delay (FID), engineering teams must optimize main thread responsiveness alongside download speed.

1. Conquering Interaction to Next Paint (INP < 200ms)

INP measures the delay between a user interaction (clicking a button, opening an accordion) and the moment the browser presents the next visual frame. Long-running JavaScript tasks blocking the main thread cause high INP. Break heavy compute loops using scheduler.yield() or requestAnimationFrame.

2. Optimizing Largest Contentful Paint (LCP < 2.5s)

The hero image or master headline is almost always the LCP element. Never lazy-load the above-the-fold hero image. Add priority={true} and fetchpriority='high' to instruct the browser to begin downloading hero assets before executing client scripts.

"Never lazy-load your hero image. Lazy-loading the above-the-fold visual element destroys LCP scores by forcing the browser to wait for JavaScript hydration before requesting the image."

3. Minimizing Time to First Byte (TTFB < 200ms)

Keep TTFB under 200ms by caching static pages on global CDN edges and optimizing database connection pooling using Prisma Accelerate or Neon serverless connection managers.

  • Target INP < 150ms: Keep all user event handlers under 50ms of CPU compute time.
  • Target LCP < 2.0s: Serve WebP/AVIF hero imagery with fetchpriority='high'.
  • Target CLS = 0: Zero unexpected layout displacement across viewport resizes.
  • Target TTFB < 100ms: Cache pre-rendered HTML on edge CDN points of presence.
Monitoring in Production

Lab Lighthouse scores only tell part of the story. Use Google Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) and real user monitoring (RUM) to track actual field scores across mobile devices.
