UI/UX Agency: What to evaluate before hiring
Key deliverables, accessibility standards, and contract terms to demand before signing. Spot the red flags and compare agencies with confidence.
Hiring a digital design studio is one of the most consequential decisions a founding team or product leader can make. The right partner accelerates your time-to-market, elevates brand perception, and directly influences conversion rates. The wrong partner drains months of runway delivering unbuildable Figma mockups that engineering handoffs reject.
1. Scope Transparency vs. Vague Promises
Many design agencies pitch visionary aesthetics during sales calls, but their contracts lack concrete deliverables. Before committing, ensure your statement of work (SOW) explicitly outlines component-level specifications, responsive breakpoints (mobile, tablet, desktop, ultra-wide), micro-interaction prototypes, and edge-case states (empty states, errors, loading skeletons).
"A design that looks stunning in a static canvas but ignores real-world latency, responsive reflow, and edge cases is not design — it is merely illustration."
2. Design System Architecture & Component Reusability
Verify whether the studio builds with atomic design systems or draws disconnected artboards. Modern digital products require unified token architectures: semantic color variables, scalable typographic scales, standardized spacing grids, and modular component variants that map 1:1 to your frontend code.
3. Accessibility & Compliance Standards
Accessibility is no longer an optional cherry on top; it is a fundamental legal and commercial requirement. Demand compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA standards. Color contrast ratios, minimum tap target sizes (44x44px), keyboard navigation flows, and ARIA screen reader landmarks must be architected from day one.
4. Full Source Ownership & Zero Lock-in
Ensure your agreement explicitly guarantees 100% intellectual property transfer upon final invoice payment. You should receive original Figma files with full component libraries, localized assets, font licensing guidance, and complete production code without recurring agency licensing traps.
- Audit past engineering handoffs: Speak with past client CTOs on how cleanly designs mapped to code.
- Inspect Figma component hygiene: Check for Auto Layout 5.0, variables, and responsive constraints.
- Verify WCAG 2.2 AA compliance: Demand minimum 4.5:1 text contrast and full keyboard operability.
- Demand full IP assignment: 100% source files transferred with zero ongoing license fees.
Never hire an agency based solely on pretty Dribbble shots. Demand to inspect actual production web apps they designed and ask their client engineering teams about handoff friction.
