Eliminating Layout Shifts (CLS 0): Next/Image and Font Optimization Strategies
How to fix Cumulative Layout Shift permanently. Aspect ratio boxes, next/font zero-FOUT rendering, and skeleton placeholders.
Few web experiences are more irritating than trying to click a button only to have the entire page suddenly jump 200 pixels downward because an image or custom web font finally finished loading. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures this visual instability, and Google penalizes shifting websites heavily.
1. Zero Layout Shift with next/image
Always provide explicit width and height attributes or use fill with relative aspect-ratio wrappers. The Next.js Image component automatically injects intrinsic aspect ratio CSS, reserving the exact screen space before the image binary downloads.
2. Zero FOUT with next/font
Flash of Unstyled Text (FOUT) occurs when browser fallback fonts swap for custom web fonts with different character dimensions, triggering layout shifts. next/font automatically inlines font CSS and adjusts fallback glyph metrics (size-adjust) to ensure zero displacement.
"Every layout shift is a UX bug. Reserving exact layout dimensions for dynamic images, fonts, and advertisements achieves CLS 0."
3. Reserving Space for Dynamic Banners
Promotional banners or cookie consent dialogs that pop into the DOM after hydration must be rendered with fixed min-height wrappers or position: fixed overlays to prevent content reflow.
- Wrap fill images in div containers with fixed aspect-ratio: 16/9 or aspect-video.
- Load Google Fonts exclusively via next/font/google to eliminate external CSS round-trips.
- Use blurDataURL placeholders on above-the-fold hero imagery.
- Keep ads and third-party widgets contained inside pre-allocated min-h-[250px] boxes.
Google Search Console requires CLS to be strictly under 0.1 for 75% of visits. With proper next/image and next/font usage, your CLS will measure exactly 0.00.
