Edge Middleware & Caching: How to Serve Global Web Apps in Under 100ms

When serving global audiences from London and New York to Singapore and Tokyo, speed of light across fiber-optic cables becomes your primary bottleneck. Serving responses from a single origin server in Virginia imposes 250ms of unavoidable network latency on Asian and European users.

1. Executing Logic at Edge Points of Presence

Next.js Edge Middleware executes lightweight V8 isolate code within 50ms of the user's geographic location. Authentication checks, bot detection, geo-redirects, and feature-flag routing resolve at the edge before requests ever touch your origin server.

2. The Stale-While-Revalidate (SWR) Caching Strategy

Configure Cache-Control headers with s-maxage=60, stale-while-revalidate=86400. Visitors receive instant, edge-cached content in sub-50ms, while the CDN asynchronously fetches updated data in the background.

"Do not make users wait for origin servers halfway around the globe. Move authentication, caching, and routing to the distributed edge."

3. Edge Key-Value (KV) Storage for Real-Time Config

Pairing Edge Middleware with distributed KV stores (Vercel KV or Cloudflare KV) allows instant retrieval of user session flags and feature configurations with sub-15ms latency.

  • Edge Middleware: Sub-10ms execution on V8 isolate without cold starts.
  • Cache-Control: s-maxage=300, stale-while-revalidate=86400 delivers 99% CDN hit ratio.
  • Geo-routing: Direct users to regional localized currency and language versions instantly.
  • Bot prevention: Block malicious scraping requests at the edge before server compute charges occur.
Edge Rule

Keep edge middleware code lightweight (under 1MB) and free of heavy Node.js standard libraries to maintain sub-10ms execution times.
